AT OBERLIN COLLEGE'S LITTLE THEATER,


Eight Plays Performed On Alternate Nights FEBRUARY 4-8, 2004

 

PRESS RELEASE: OBERLIN, OHOberlin Shorts, a festival of eight one-act plays by Oberlin students and alumna, comes to Oberlin for six energetic performances. All of the one-act plays are directed and performed by Oberlin students. Oberlin Shorts will be performed Wednesday – Sunday, February 4 – 8, at 8PM, and Friday, February 6, at 2PM, in the Little Theater.

Oberlin Shorts includes works by seven current students and one alumna. The plays include introspective life dramas as well as absurdist, romantic, and philosophical comedies. “Scripts were selected by the student directors,” explains Oberlin Shorts Artistic Director and Associate Professor of Theater Paul Moser. “The directors and playwrights really get to work together, making this a very collaborative process.” Oberlin Shorts is sponsored by the Oberlin College Theater and Dance Program. LOVE SCENE by Baraka Noel ’06

What happens when acting students try to rehearse a love scene? While poking fun at playwrights, actors, students, theater, and life, the play also portrays emotionality as a humorous ordeal that humans must suffer through to be able to interact . . . and positions actors as the worst of the bunch.

Directed by Alan Kline ’07, and featuring Oberlin students Brian Piper ‘07 as Dan, Jessica Bedwinek ’05 as Jen, Nick Aszling ‘07 as Stan, Josh Luxenberg ’06 as Ben, and Aubri O’Connor ’04 as Ann. Jesse Garrison ‘07, Assistant Stage Manager.

DARK COMEDY by Jon Levin ’07

Dark Comedy is what we would call comedy in a vacuum. It contains characters who represent different forms of comedy, from puns to taboo humor. However, the characters come to realize that comedy cannot exist without the straight man.
